A few months ago I had a dream in which I somehow discovered that Trump didn't know how to really read, and had worked his way through school with other means, and currently relies on text to voice etc. There were of course bizarre portions of the dream as well, it is a dream after all. But something someone said recently made me think of this dream again, and since I'm behind on my poem count, I turned it into a poem. It takes the idea of him not being able to read, and instead attacks the fact that, seemingly, he doesn't. I won't get into all of that. However, it also touches on the idea of the fear felt by many to criticize a leader or president directly, or in writing, or a traceable way. Especially if they feel that leader may one day have it out, literally, for people like them.
So, thinking of those things resulted in the following. It's a serious topic, and normally I prefer assonance to rhyme, but the poem uses both. I'm not sure this is the final iteration (I wrote most of it in bed in my head and then typed it up this morning) but here it is.
NaPoWriMo Poem 11
"The President Doesn't Read"
You may be fearful
to criticize a spiteful leader
But in this case, you're safe
Write whatever you please
This president doesn't read
Investigate, expose,
follow your knows
Use a big picture
Put the headline in bold
That's all he'll see
Cause the president doesn't read
Make it long, be verbose
Send it to a
famous publishing house
The more literary, the more contrary
The more security
to say what you need
Cause the president doesn't read
He hasn't the time
To read print that's fine
The most words he'll digest
Fly from a blue canary's nest
He's barely a minute
So please understand his limit
Tweet clearly what you mean
Else the president won't read
And lay your worries to rest
About what he'll do if he sees
Broaden the scope
redirect your prayers and your hope
Worry instead
about all the wordy leader's said
And the fear that he feeds
Cause pontificating
can make citizens bleed
When a president don't read
