Poem One: National Poetry Month Challenge 2017

It's April 1st, and no jokes here; it is time to start my National Poetry Month Challenge!

I spent the day doing taxes. Perhaps not the most poetic of endeavors, but I'm ready to go. With less than an hour left of day one, I'm really starting at the end of things, in a way.

Despite the anticipation I found myself a bit stuck, so as I sometimes do in such cases, I looked around me for inspiration. Immediately to my right, is one of my bookshelves. It struck me, why not? And as soon as I started to type the titles, I knew I could play with them more. So you can read this as a list, but I like to read it as a cast of characters. The titles work as both nouns and verbs. They're quite a crazy, mixed up bunch.

Remember, no major editing.

I had fun writing poem one. 29 more to go.

I hope you enjoy it, and write one of your own! :)

NPMC Poem 1

"Bookshelf"

The Monsters of Templeton
hide below
the Dud Avocado and
a Crack in the Line

Matilda sits patiently
below Pandemonium
while The Duke of Deception
stands at attention with
Goat who's still Under the Influence

Or to see it another way
Elizabeth Bishop, Muriel Barbery, and Franz Kafka
are roommates sharing
a matteressless bunk
while Charles Bukowski stands watch

Hats & Eyeglasses, The Gates, The Help
Filled with Glee and Enchantment
pile in with Jesus's Son and The Blue Fox
also full of Endless Love
and the Divinity of Doubt

Unexpectedly, Milo, Marley & Me
and Beowulf, too
Solve Your Own Mystery Stories
while Hating Olivia

The Pilot's Wife and Geek Squad
are Steering the Craft,
creating The Glass Books of the Dream Eaters

What else can they do,
stuck, still, gathering dust
but have sudden ideas--
Cats: For Dummies!

Does Ernest Hemingway whisper
to Marion Winik?
Wish he could invite
Capriece Crane to tea?
Or read with Bryan Lee O'Malley?

Do they ever wonder at what
A Fine Balance they keep?
Desire to be The Catcher and the Rye
or Just One of the Guys?
Then again, maybe they realize
God is not Great and they
can't all be
on the GRE: English Literature Test,
and anyway, there's so much more value
in being dog eared by an admirer
then taking a long,
long rest.
