NPMC 20: Another Way to Hula Hoop

I'm doing finals on the beach this week. And as vacation has always been an inspiration for writing to me, you shouldn't be surprised if I finish up my challenge this week either, despite those looming final portfolios due Wednesday.

Speaking of, the description below is real, nonfiction, and makes me rethink hula hooping in whole new ways.

NPMC2015 Poem 20:
"Another Way to Hula Hoop"

Around and round and round
round and round
the gentle back and forth
swerving of the hips

a bright green hula hoop
not tracing the lithe waist
of a small girl
but the muscular, tanned
belly of a man

it seems he could go on forever
his hands pressed behind his head
his hoop swinging in and out
round and round
above the lady laid out upon the sand

gentle, relaxed, steady
as they collect the sun
keep the time
and spin
