April sprung up on me out of nowhere. I still think April is another month away, and it is already the 8th! I missed David Sedaris' reading last night, the true tragedy of the moment, for this very reason that I thought April 7th was still at least a week away and I could spirit myself away with a last minute ticket.
I share this to point out that I am truly sorry for missing the start of National Poetry Month and for not kicking off my yearly (though last year fell the flattest of all) Poetry Challenge!
Here's the short of it. April is National Poetry Month, and it is also a time of year that I find writing hard to squeeze in with all the events and deadlines and typical Spring Fever. So, I challenged myself some odd years ago, and anyone else out there, to write a poem a day in April. Later this was altered to write a poem for each day, meaning by the end of April you should have 30 poems.
I loved it, even if I didn't love all of my poems, and hence have continued, though less tenderheartedly in some years than others, every year.
Well, now it is April 2015, and I challenge me and you, yet again. Whether you are a poet or writer or not, I challenge you to do it.
The rules are simple:
So here we go. Made up just now. 1 of 30.
Edit: A bit of a dark kick off, but a kick off nonetheless.
NPMC2015: Poem 1
"The Weeping Hands of Time"
The weeping angels of Dr. Who
their stoney faces covered by heavenly hands
that hide deadly long teeth that never bite
are not frightening
for the obvious reasons
No, it is their speed
and the touch of those same promising hands
their hands of time
that reveal the truth
Time is not only what they steal
but also what they represent
Think of it now
how time moves so quickly when we are not watching
so slowly when we do
how violent the sudden appearance of a deadline
the stinging pain of potential being sucked away
when we realize what has passed
We fear the weeping angels
because they are real
and we are surrounded

The rules are simple:
- Write 30 poems in April. They don't need to be polished, they just need to be.
(It is kind of like Nano, only far less stressful. ) - They must be original, not re-writes of something you wrote before.
So here we go. Made up just now. 1 of 30.
