Bedtime Poems

I am long over due for these (long past April poetry challenge which I didn't even acknowledge this year), and they were there, bouncing on my pillow, refusing to let me sleep. So now that I have put them to rest, perhaps they will let me do the same.

"Night Thoughts"

I do my best thinking at night.
When much of the world has gone to sleep.
Yes, much.
I can't say most, or even half.
There is so much waking in these midnighted hours.
So much not yet sleeping.
So much no intention for slumber.

"Communication"

I wonder if you'll remember
how the sounds fumbled from your mouth
quickly tumbling forward so anxious
to become words

Your B's becoming D's
Your D's becoming F's
the ends of things drowning in drool
and fluttered lips
slogged down by uncertainty
in the final second

Yet again you regained excitement
for your voice
your little voice so gentle and loud
and sounds burst forth anew
still forgetting themselves
losing their way to words
but bringing with them
so much meaning

"A Poem for the Lazy and the Concise"

Aren't all poems meant just for you?
No time to fully explain
But plenty of time to think somewhere else
until so much meaning forces you here
a purpose broiling just below the surface
so boisterous, it seeks truth
yet can't find the time to say more
can't find the time to show the way
leaving just enough crumbs
for the answer to feast on

Yes, these words are just for you
you proud little poet you
both lazy and concise
and for those who walk within your brain way

but pithy you are not
not to those residing on the other side of the fence
whose grass you have never envied
