Hey! It's Poetry Month!!
You have to forgive me for the late start. My son was born March 21st. He's just over two weeks today and time just doesn't move the same with him around. It took awhile for me to register that it was APRIL, let alone National Poetry Month, and that that meant poems!
Since I wasn't able to enter my normal Fall writing contest, I think it is important I keep up my Challenge for National Poetry Month. This is the third year running, and for those doing it with me, I hope you got an earlier start than I did! :)
So today is the 8th, so I'm 8 poems behind! Let's see what I can do today.
So begins the National Poetry Month Challenge 2013!
1.
What They Don't Tell You
There is a ton of advice
when you get pregnant
so much that it contradicts
knots up on itself
twists your mind about
makes you crazy
But what they don't tell you
what they keep locked away
in the corners of their smiles
weighing down their pleasant nods
is far more
more than you can imagine
more than words can really say
It's not just the truths about recovery
the aches and pains
or how memories so quickly slip away
It's not just tidbits about newborn fears
that lie dormant in us all
It's not just how time sucks away and comes back again
how weeks feel like years but days feel like hours
It's not just the secret of that warp
There's more
more than love
more than instinct
more than protection
more than genes
Some try to tell you and fail
most don't bother
they simply smile, nod, say
just wait
When you know, you'll know
When you know, you'll see
And one day
when you meet a mother to be
you too will feel the secret within you
and tuck it into the corner of your smile
2.
Let's build a Library
Let's build a library
of all the books we've read
We'll stack them on tables
and stuff them in chairs
because the shelves are already full
and there's too many piles
on the stairs
We'll hide them in our bed
balance all the table legs in the house
never open the closet again
without a helmet
trade cereal and canned goods
for novels and poetry
We'll keep going
to the ceiling
to the attic
to the roof
to the stars
we'll ignore words like
"fire hazard"
And kick Kindles into Nooks
with satisfying cracks
We'll smell the pages
rub the covers
inhale the adventrues
We won't alphabetize
organize
or create cards
But Satisfaction
will never be overdue
