So I'm super behind in my challenge, but I'm trying to also write a novel for a change. I have about a page. So, you know. The issue is we're approaching finals and I need to find a summer job unless enrollment goes up (I'll likely need that summer job) and so most of my free time is spent job hunting. I admit that this feels silly, so it made me feel better when another professor admitted to doing the same thing. But anyway, on to the poems. The first one I actually wrote a few days ago, strange enough it was on the same general topic (this is said with only mild surprise).
10: Repositioned
Last year I was here
doing just this
it doesn’t seem three hundred
and sixty five days away
yet it is
three thousand six hundred and fifty
days ago
I was nearly done with high school
nearly done with being a child
or so I thought
sometimes a week lingers
like a fly that buzzes in your ear
then again moments later
and again
and you think, what the hec
are you still here
a day can last forever
if you play it right
toss in a little torture
but the years just keep on sliding by
the future always ahead of us
seemingly downhill
---
11: The Face of Time
Time has been a soldier
a teacher
a thief
Times has been a mistress
a monster
a ghost
Time has been inconsequential
and of the essence
We’ve begged for more of it
bartered for less of it
we’ve ignored it
lost it
changed it
suffered through it
seen it stand still
and felt it speed by
--
12: Stop
Stop
Stop
Stop
why is such nonaction so damn hard
Stop not Go
Meaning cease
to do nothing
to pause
Stop
Surely nothing is easier than something
but it isn’t nothing, stopping
it is something
to stop the momentum
to stop the push
to stop the habit
the consistency
Like a bus crashing into a wall
Stopping quickly is always hard
---
13: Worthy Adversary
As others meander into a time of peace
I prepare to wage a war
They let their guards down
Assured of their safety
and I take up watch
with nothing but my bare thoughts
as weapons
Most are already dreaming
when the enemy arrives
taken in by his promises of rest
or rejuvenation
I want to believe his promises
but instead of allowing me to fall
like the rest
Sleep taunts me
alludes me
and we fight a losing battle
