It is rare that I feel poetically inclined, and yet this is all I wanted to say today.
Cat Talk
If my cat and I
were more multilingually inclined
I would know her language
and she would know mine
And I would ask her how she can live
so afraid all the time
every little thing a startle
every noise giving pause
Don't you know we love you?
I'd say
Don't you know you're safe?
And she would look at me
and give a list
of minor atrocities
why do you make me share,
she'd say
my litter and my food
with that other one over there
And we'd both turn to Zelda
the other cat
who we know understands us
as she rolls around on her back in the sun
and watch her ignore us
because for her
life is just too fun
