Organization

My husband and I constantly argue about what is organized and what is not. We will get high and mighty and state the definition of organization, which does no good because we always agree on it.
Basically- everything has a place.
Of course then we get into the particulars of what defines an organized "place."
Place: easy to find that makes sense.

Ok again no argument.
Where the problem really comes in is what "makes sense"
To me a place that makes sense is any place where I can easily locate the object that is out of the way of my daily procedures, unless I need it in the way because I use it constantly.

My husband's definition sounds similar, except he puts emphasis on the fact that it not look messy.

Again we disagree on what "messy" really means and here we find the circle. It's messy if it isn't organized!

Though today I think I've finally figured out the line. My husband, who color coordinates his closet and labels everything he can, seems to believe in uniform systems that would allow almost anyone to find something should he ask them to retrieve it. This results in the fact that most everything needs to be "put away" or to a point out of sight, unless it looks nice (classy)to be out.

My definition is just as complicated on one level, but far more simple. Things need to be categorized in such a way as I can find them, and me alone. I like a little clutter in my life, therefore such organization does not require as many boxes or labels as his. I will let things go further than he before I declare them "messy."

i.e.
His books are alphabetical by author and subject.
My books are organized by use and original purpose.
I'm perfectly fine to have a Pen and Battery drawer.
He thinks if a drawer should have more than one object, it should at least make sense like Pen and Pencil drawer or Pencil and Eraser drawer.
He scoffs at my "office supplies" drawer claiming it is unorganized. But I know exactly where to go should I need to find an office supply.
He wants to compromise and place the items in little separators or tubs. I find this too tedious to sustain, though quite fun to create.

This is why we have two separate closets and its better that way. This is why I am comforted by the odd style of our furniture and items. It is neither overly me or him, but a beautiful compromise that just screams us. If this requires keeping separate desks, shelves, and closets, then so be it.
