So I've been trying to get my cats on a healthier diet. I care about them and I figured it would be easier to get them eating healthy than it would be myself.
Wrong. I'm not willing to go on a hunger strike.
If I slice off a bit of steak while I'm preparing it or from my plate, they eat it. If I give them a raw chicken wing, they lick it to death. But if I put beef or chicken or venison or lamb in their bowl in round pureed medallion style pieces, they literally turn up tail and nose and strut from the room.
Eventually they return and eat it, but that's after they are probably starving. Astrid, for example, had a full plate of fresh food and I found her chewing on a used ziplock in the kitchen.
I've tried flavoring it, adding broth, cooking it. Cooked it smells like little hamburgers and I want to eat them. But no. While they may reluctantly eat it, they do not get excited. They don't even try it until they feel they have to.
I tried easing them into it. No good. They will just skip that meal knowing the next will be the canned. I tried mixing it. I mixed it with the canned puree because I thought that would be easier and one consistency.
They've also been on a snuggle strike.
Then yesterday I mixed it with one of the gravy cans. The morsels. The little chunks smothered in gravy. Not only did they clean their bowls, but they followed me around all day and snuggled me on the couch.
Gravy is what they want. Gravy isn't very healthy. It's like me saying yes I'll eat this tasty salad, but let me smother it in ranch dressing first.
At least they're getting nutrients with their fat.
Most importantly, I'm getting snuggles.
