bird concerns

Would I have noticed the smaller size of the news paper had it not used to fit perfectly in the bottom of my birdcage?

A Pigeon landed on the deck while I had the cat out there and she swatted at it and hit it. The pigeon seemed ok, flew away. Astrid tried to swallow one of its shedded feathers. Should I be concerned? (bugs or something?)
