Zagajewski and Poetry

Adam Zagajewski explained last night how some people view poetry as a lofty thing that you do not laugh at even when it is intended to be laughed at. He thinks they feel that moment of lightness but then think "no, no, no I mustn't laugh."

I think I am one of those people who view poetry as lofty, but know darn well that it isn't, which is why I laugh when I'm supposed to and I am always pleasantly pleased at when poetry references everyday lives, ordinary words, or humor. I don't know why I feel so about poetry. I'm always ho-hum about going to poetry readings vs any other type of readings.

My own poetry is hit and miss at best I think. I love Kendra's poem about Little Dog. I enjoyed, mostly, the reading last night as well. Though poetry has the same effect on me as low voices and my mind is want to be inspired and wander on about its own things and miss the middle of the poem.

Adam is a wonderful poet, and when my mind began to wander and I missed a line or two, I knew it was good from the audible expressions from the people behind me "woah" and "wow." Making me feel left out and irritated with my wandering mind.

His poem, which I think was called Antenas in the Rain, was very interesting. It is the type of thing I like, all those unrelated lines clearly in someway being related. Maybe I will take a poetry workship next Fall. I'm still undecided.

I found it intersting to how Adam said all his poems come to him in Polish, where as V. Mort says some poems come to her in English. It's amazing how our minds work.
Also Adam does all his revisions very close to his work, when we are often told to wait and let it cool, he does not. I liked his discription of it turing from something hot and moldable to a cold brick he can do nothing more with.
